Nota biográfica

José Forjaz is an architect, Master in Architecture (Columbia University, New York) and director of the José Forjaz - Arquitectos Lda. He is a member of several Orders of Architects, being an honorary member of the Order of Architects of Portugal, since 2006. He is an Extraordinary Honorary Member of the CIALP-International Council of Portuguese-speaking Architects. He carried out a vast work of architecture and also of urbanism. He worked as an architect in Swaziland between 1968 and 1975. In the early years of Mozambique's independence, between 1977 and 1986, he was Director of the National Directorate of Housing and then Secretary of State for Physical Planning. Between 1990 and 2009, he was professor and Director of the Faculty of Architecture and Physical Planning at Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), in Maputo, of which he was a founder. In 2013, he was recognized as Professor Emeritus of UEM. He was a visiting professor at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”; the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; the University of California San Diego. He was also a visiting professor in several countries (Australia, South Africa, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, USA, Finland, India, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Zimbabwe). He received several awards, among them the “Medal of Merit Arts and Letters” from Mozambique and the first prize awarded by the Ruth and Ralph Erskine Foundation, in Stockholm, Sweden. He has held conferences and exhibitions of his work in several countries (Mozambique, Portugal, USA, Italy, Norway, Finland, South Africa, India, Brazil, Japan, Botswana, Australia). He has published several articles and books, such as “From adobe to stainless steel”, Instituto Camões, Lisbon and has had his articles published in many magazines and books in several countries.
