Vanessa de Pacheco Melo is an architect, gratuated from the University of Lisbon in 1998. She completed her master's degree in Sustainable Planning and Construction at the Lusíada University of Lisbon, in 2008, with the thesis “Planning and sustainable construction on the outskirts of Maputo: the Mumemo 4 de Outubro neighborhood in the context of the peri-urban area of the capital”. She did her PhD in Urbanism in 2015, with the thesis “The recent production of African urban peripheries. Discourses, practices and spatial configuration: Maputo versus Luanda and Johannesburg”. She has been a member of the Grupo de Estudos Sócio-Territoriais Urbanos e de Ação Local (GESTUAL-CIAUD/FA-UL) since 2009, where she is part of the research project "Africa Habitat: From the sustainability of habitat to the quality of inhabiting in the urban margins of Luanda and Maputo (2018/2021)", coordinated by Isabel Raposo. In 2016, she did a post-doctorate at the School of Architecture and Planning, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa). In 2018, she started another post-doctorate at the University of the Azores, as a fellow of the Regional Fund for Science and Technology of the Azores (M3.1.a./F/009/2006), being the researcher responsible for the project “Tourism and Landscape in the Azores: change, challenges and opportunities. Research contributions towards collaborative planning and management strategies”.
